Make a Small Bathroom Feel Big

No matter where you live, chances are you wish you had a more spacious bathroom. When major renovation is not an option, how do you create more room in the same amount of space? By thinking creatively, and making use of a few visual tricks. Here are a few ideas to get you started in making a small bathroom feel larger.

Light colors in flooring, tile, wallpaper and paint will make the room feel more spacious and airy. Lighter colors reflect more light. By no means does this restrict you to an all white bath - lighter shades of your favorite color can still make a statement while keeping the room bright.

Good lighting is essential. Shadowy corners will make any room feel cramped or unkempt. There are many options to fit both your style and your budget. Recessed lighting can be installed at several points in the ceiling to banish shadows altogether, and does not take up counter or wall space. Wall sconces or even a small chandelier can add elegance. Check your existing fixtures - you may be able to improve the lighting in your bathroom simply by installing a brighter bulb.

Consider how far any element in the room protrudes. For example, replacing a vanity with a pedestal basin opens up floor space, visually broadening the room. Likewise, shelves, towel racks, and sconces that reach to far out make a room feel smaller and disrupts the space. Consider towel bars instead of shelves. Keep decorative accents close to the wall to allow as much free space as possible.

The thing that will have the most significant effect in making your bathroom seem more spacious is to strictly eliminate all clutter. If you don't need it in the bathroom, take it out, with the exception of a few decorative accents. Overcrowded shelves, cupboards, vanities and walls crowd a room. Look at each thing in the room and consider whether or not you use it, in that room, on a regular basis. If you don't, the item may have a better home elsewhere in the house. Remove beauty and hygiene supplies from the countertops, and find them a home elsewhere. If you don't have a cupboard, an attractive basket under the sink will hold your supplies, keeping them close at hand while reducing clutter.

Size matters! A large mirror will reflect light, and can trick the eye into expanding the space, while one or more small mirrors can crowd the wall. Likewise, a larger rather than smaller tile is a good choice in flooring, often making the area seem broader. Also consider downsizing your bathroom suite. Many bathtubs and showers are available in smaller sizes. A little extra floor space can go a long ways.
