Plywood Roof Sheeting - Roof Framing Trade Secrets

Most framing contractor's look at the building plans and order all of the material, according to those that are specified on the plans. This works out fine, and can often save you money, but rarely produces the best home that you could possibly frame.

As a professional framing contractor, I would like to share one of my house framing tips with you. Most plans require half-inch plywood or oriented strand board as their roof sheeting. This product is fine and if you're building a lot of homes, you're not going to have the choice. Ordering larger sized plywood could cost you thousands of dollars, especially if you're building a lot of homes.

However, if your framing or building a home for someone or even yourself, you might want to take my advice and think twice about it, before ordering the roof sheeting. Half-inch plywood, works okay for 16 inch on center roof rafters or engineered truss roofing systems. It doesn't work well on 24 inch on center roof rafters spacing.

It is usually flimsy and weak at the center point, directly in between the 24 inch roof rafter bays. If you're going to use the half-inch plywood, I would recommend using plywood clips that are relatively inexpensive and can be placed in the direct center of each roof rafter bay on each sheet of plywood. These can be purchased at most home improvement centers or lumber yards.

The other alternative, and this is what I recommend, would be to use 5/8 inch plywood. This plywood works great for 24 inch on center roof rafters and you will have a nice sturdy roof to walk on, while roofing your home.

I have actually seen people step through the flimsy plywood, while lifting heavy roof tiles and bundles of composition roof shingles. Experienced roofers try to walk directly on top of the roof rafters, when loading their roof shingles or even carrying them on the roof.

If you're a home builder and your concern is about making a profit, you will need to use the half-inch plywood. If you want to build a superior roof, use the 5/8 of an inch plywood.

Subfloor Damage From Poor Bathtub Installation - Read Bath Tub Fixture Manuals

You should never under estimate the amount of damage that water can do to your wood subfloor. Especially if this wood is underneath your bathtub. If the bathtub is not installed properly, you could find yourself replacing the wood underneath, within a short period of time. This repair is not uncommon and as more homeowners and handyman seemed to be doing projects like these, without the proper experience, it's becoming even more common.

I wish I had a solution to the problem, however, I don't. The best advice I could give anyone who is going to be involved in any home remodeling project, would be to get some books on what ever task you are about to undertake and read all of the information that you possibly can about the products you are going to be installing. This is extremely helpful for anyone who has never installed a bathtub or any bathtub fixtures.

If the product fails and was installed properly, the manufacturer should be responsible for the water damage. I have been reading the manufacturer's installation manuals for quite some time now and every once in a while, I find something that is of great value to me and I get to pass it on to my readers. That's what I'm doing right now.

Whether you want to remodel your bathroom to save money or you want to accomplish a task that you haven't done yet. I would recommend, taking the time to understand, exactly how the water flows off of and on to another section of the bath tub or shower on its way to the drain. Understanding the basics of bathroom remodeling can save you big money in the future.

Save yourself some money and make sure that you install your bathtubs properly. Taking a little time before you start to read the bath tub fixture manuals, can save you some money and grief in the future.

Five Things That a Termite Inspection Company Might Not Ever Say

I don't think that I've ever heard of a termite inspector, ever go to a home and not find any termites. Even if the home doesn't have any damage that is visible from the termites, it seems like it's always a good idea, to tent the home, just in case, for protection. Anyway, here's five things that you might not ever hear a termite inspector ever say.

1. Your house is free of termites. This means that there isn't, one termite on your property and the termite inspector isn't going to make any money. Let's face it, termite damage, whether it's visible or invisible, keeps these guys working.

2. Your house isn't going to fall down, if I don't do anything to stop the termites. I have seen homes, where termites have been working on them for quite some time and they still seem to stand up and function properly.

3. Termites don't eat much and I wouldn't worry about the damage. Most termite inspectors will tell you how much a termite in Hawaii or Africa will eat in a day, but doesn't seem to have an honest idea, how much damage they are doing to your home, if they can't actually see it.

4. Every one that works for our company, has at least 30 years experience, repairing any termite damage. Don't even get me started with this one.

5. We will replace all of the termite damage wood, back to its original condition. What they might say, is that they will replace the wood that is damaged by termites, that you can actually see.

There are plenty of great termite companies out there and this article was meant just to have fun with most of them. Termite damage can be a serious problem with some homes and I would suggest that you contact at least three termite inspectors, before proceeding ahead with any home repairs or use of chemicals.

Try not to forget, the only way that a termite inspection company will make any money, looking at your house, will be to find something wrong with it.

What If My Contractor Does Not Return My Call

This is one of the biggest problems in business today. You have some work done on your home in good faith that the contractor knows what he is doing. When all is said and done you have a problem that needs to be resolved as soon as possible. I really don't care how long it has been since the work was done. If you have a problem the least that your contractor can do is answer the telephone.

Some companies go out of business and others get to busy to respond to your problem. You will hear the old excuse "That's not my problem" or the ever popular " I didn't do that". I have been in business for over twenty years and had very few problems. Of course I built things to last as long as possible.

Keep in mind that some contractors are a one man operation and they might be on vacation. Some contractors do not answer their phones over the week ends or after business hours. So don't sink the ship to fast.

Do not call the Contractors Licensing Board or the Better Business Bureau unless it has been at least a few working days. I would give it at least a week or so. Oh yeah don't assume that the contractor got your message. Call a few times at the least.

It has always made me mad when I have to fix someone else's problems. I get the call when the other contractors won't respond. I listen to the home owner with regret for being in a business where I am considered a crook. This is one of the reasons why contractors in my business get out of it.

If you have the contractors address and they aren't responding by phone you can always send them a letter by certified mail. Request a return receipt. That's your proof that the company received your letter. Keep a copy for your files.

The good news for a home owner when a contractor will not respond to your calling them is the Department of Consumer Affairs. Most states have a complaint department of some sort that will listen to your complaints. Does this mean it will get resolved? NO there are no guarantees here.

If your state has a licensing board for contractors, this will be your next step.

This will get your contractors attention and there is a great chance they will respond now. If there are enough complaints against the contractor and they do nothing about them the contractors board will take their license away.

If your contractor does not respond after all of this. There is very little you can do about it. Hire someone to fix the problem and look at it as a very important lesson learned.

If your state doesn't have a contractors licensing board contact the Better Business Bureau or your local government for their recommendation. Ask some of your friends if they have had any problems like this and how they handled them.

Plumbing Problems and Solutions - Repair Manuals

If you've owned a home for over 20 years, there's a very good chance, that you've had a water pipe break, a drainpipe clogged, a toilet that wouldn't flush right, or a water leak that damaged part of the home. If you don't know, what you're looking for and you have no idea what damage can be done, over time, this could mean trouble for the homeowner.

Plumbing problems like these have been around and will be around for many years. Knowing what to do about them, how to repair them and what materials will be needed, can be found in plumbing repair manuals for books. How would you like to have a professional plumber to advise you on your plumbing repairs. What if I told you that you could have a plumbing professional on hand at all times. Is this something that you might be interested in.

Well I can't guarantee that, so let's forget about what I just said and go to the next best thing. Plumbing repair manuals are full of tips and advice that when needed can sometimes be priceless. If water is leaking from the ceiling in your home and you have no idea, where the water is coming from or how to stop it from leaking, any information could be priceless and I mean priceless.

Plumbers, usually charge over $100 an hour for emergency service. I've seen plumbers come to peoples homes, turn the water off to the house, stop the water from leaking and now it is no longer an emergency. The plumber quickly pulls out an invoice for the plumbing repairs and it could be over $1000, if you decide that this is ridiculous and choose not to pay it, the plumber can hand you a bill for stopping the water leak. Some of these bills are what I would consider quite ridiculous, for just shutting the water off.

You're not paying the plumber for the amount of time it took him, you're paying him for his knowledge. If you knew where to shut the water off, you wouldn't have an emergency situation and could contact a plumber during normal hours. This could save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

With a simple home repair manual or a home plumbing book, you could prepare yourself for a situation like this and other plumbing problems. Most home repair manuals have general solutions and advice and can solve most of the problems around your home. If they can't solve all of the problems, they can probably save you from major catastrophes like a water leak.

Most of the time it's not the water leak that will cost the most money, it's the damage the water will do to your furniture, carpeting, wood flooring, walls or ceilings. A little information and preparation can save you a lot of money in the long run.

Basic Home Electrical Wiring - For the Do it Yourself Home Electrician

The Green Bay Packers were one of the most successful football teams and Vince Lombardi said something to them that I will never forget," This is a football." All the football players laughed and he said that we're going to start with the basics and that's what I'm going to do, with this article.

Let's start with our electrical wire, the two most common electrical wire sizes, that will be used in most homes, will be 14 and 12 gauge electrical wire. Let's clear something up, right off the bat, the smaller the number, the larger the wire. In other words a 12 gauge electrical wire is a little bit larger and will carry more electricity, for longer distances than a 14 gauge wire.

What about electrical outlet plugs? These plugs are usually the same, except for the fact that they come in different colors. When I said that most electrical plugs are the same, I'm talking about your standard wall outlet plug. There are different electrical plugs that will be used for air conditioners and some kitchen appliances like 220 Volt electric stoves and ovens.

What about your home's light switches? Your standard two way light switch will usually turn a one light on or a group of lights on, from one location. A three way light switch will usually turn one light on or a group of lights on from two different locations. A four way light switch, will usually turn one light or a group of lights on from three different locations.

It doesn't get any more basic than that. I hope this gives you a better understanding about your home's electrical system.

Tile Grouting Tips For Your Bathrooms, Kitchens and Floors

Isn't tile grouting supposed to be simple, if you read the directions and watch a couple of videos? What could make tile grouting so difficult? Grouting your tile isn't that difficult, by the time you're done reading this article, you should have a pretty good idea how to grout your floors, bathrooms, kitchens and anything else that requires tile.

I used to have problems grouting tile, but after I read the directions, I became a grouting wizard. This sounds hard to believe, but after reading the directions on the tile grout bag, I became a grout master. I know, you the type of person who never read the directions, you simply add water, mix and start grouting.

It's time to change your thinking about, whether or not the directions will be helpful. Whether it's about grouting your bathroom floor or putting together your home barbecued. I read one thing on the grout bag and it changed my entire grouting career.

The grout should slake. After you're done mixing the grout, you should wait between five and 10 minutes to let the moisture soak into the grout mix. Do this once, and you will never go back to mixing your grout and applying it, as quickly as possible after it has been mixed.

For more information on grouting, remodeling or home repairs, I would recommend reading books on home improvement and home repairs. Some of these books can make a big difference in your home improvement abilities as a handyman. I would also recommend reading more articles, there's plenty of information about tile and grouting, all over the Internet.

How to Protect Foundation Plumbing Pipes?

If you install any underground plumbing pipes, in your concrete building foundation, you will need to protect them, from the concrete. You can use a variety of products and the most common of them will be a Styrofoam wrapping that can be purchased at most plumbing supply stores.

Let's start with the waste pipes, that are made out of plastic. The concrete could actually start to put pressure on the plastic pipes as the concrete starts to expand and this pressure could actually damage your new waste pipes.

You don't need to wrap all of the plastic waste pipes, only the parts of the waste pipes that will be exposed or in direct contact any concrete, but you do need to protect every copper water supply line that will be buried under the ground or exposed to the concrete, with a plastic sleeve. These products can be purchased again at most building supply or plumbing supply stores.

If these pipes aren't protected properly, you could find yourself within a short time, repairing the pipes that are either inside of your concrete foundation or buried underneath your concrete foundation. Either way, this isn't going to be a good thing.

You definitely need to wrap a plastic sleeve around the water supply pipes that are going to be buried or in direct contact with the concrete. This is a must and most building departments will require your plumbing pipes to be wrapped, before it they will sign off on your rough foundation plumbing inspection.

However, for the waste pipes, you can actually use cardboard to protect them. If you're short on funds, why not grab some cardboard boxes, dismantle them and start using cardboard to wrap the pipes, with a little duct tape.

There are plenty of ways to save money in the construction business, buy a few books, read a couple of articles, with a lot of pictures in this can provide you with lots of construction information, from experience building contractors.

How To Make Your Kitchen Cozy

When you shape the kitchen interior, the greatest problems are connected with drawbacks of planning and lack of space. Appropriately chosen kitchen furniture can resolve this situation, even more so that variety of models gives such an opportunity. The main thing is to imagine how your own kitchen acts out, i.e. even on the stage of planning you are to foresee conformity of all objects and their sizes. Believe us, this will greatly facilitate the whole process, up to setting the last shelf in the dresser.

So, you have already made up the list of all kitchen equipment with indication of its size. Now pay attention to technical details, such as dimensions and location of the ventilation, pipes, wiring, sockets, flexible (gas, water-supply) hoses etc. Enter all necessary stuffing in your list and you can set off for the shop to make your choice. If you are going to buy all elements of kitchen interior separately, dont forget that the standard depth of household appliances is 600 mm, so check in advance the parameters of the things you need.

The dominant is high storage cabinets for storing foodstuffs and high cabinets for storing inventory (brushes, brooms etc). It is necessary to remember that they should not break off the work surface and they should not be located on the outskirts of your kitchen field. If you prefer an inbuilt grill or oven, it is the high storage cabinet that will accommodate them without breaking the uniformity. Besides you can pick up the height of their location, so that it is convenient for you.

Now lets touch upon on-floor cabinets. They are the basis of your workspace, their height directly affects the extent of your hands fatigue after cooking food, a great amount of drawers on rollers can help simplify reaching out for any object of kitchen interior that you need at the moment. We advise that you plan the space of on-floor cabinets in such a way, that the most frequently used objects could be easily accessed (pullout rotating shelves), while the rarely used dishware can be placed on the ordinary shelves.
A detail: trays and baking sheets can be conveniently settled in the plinth case under the on-floor table, which in fact, can have any width, depending on your requirements. If the height of the on-floor cabinet (preparation table) is not convenient for you, the plinth will add several centimeters, necessary for your accommodation and will relieve your hands and back of overstrain. Important: it is extremely comfortable to work while sitting, so if you decided to bring in something new to the interior and give yourself a treat, plan a pullout shelf under one of cabinets of work surface or get a high (bar) stool.

Overhead cabinets are to be located not less than 450 mm from the work surface, it is necessary, in order to accommodate freely all used electrical appliances (a food processor, a coffee-machine, a toaster etc). The height of standard cabinets is 600 mm, perforce you can buy 900-mm cabinets. They will exactly reach the ceiling in typical flats. Even if after all this, there are some things left and there is some vacant space on top, we finish the composition by entresol shelves up to the ceiling (open or closed ones) or a cornice with inbuilt lamps. Corner wall-mounted cabinets have either open shelves, or a folding door, which makes all the contents visible; the rotating shelf is remarkable for its capacity and convenience.
The distance between the work surface and overhead cabinets is called the apron. With regard to the work surface the main thing for the apron is to be in harmony with it as to colour and texture. For instance, a glossy table top and glazed tiles, mat colour of the work surface and mat apron (covered with mat washable wallpapers or imitation of tiles).

Such attention to the image of the apron is connected with the fact that it should protect the wall from dirtying, for example, from grease that can be easily washed off. The work surface is often overloaded with objects and their abundance induces the feeling of discomfort. We will free it with the help of the apron. Lets fix the microwave oven on brackets, arrange the parade of species on the miniature shelves and place the small metal items and knives on the magnetic panel. One more nuance: the decorative nook (plinth), made of water-resistant materials, will protect the back surfaces of on-floor cabinets from ingress of moisture.

When you place standard furniture, there may be narrow gaps between separate elements or between the furniture and the wall. Use them put a narrow shelf or a table in this gap. For example, a movable table will increase the active surface and will be used as a serving table.
A narrow socle will prove useful for storing preparation plates, towels, bottles. Select the same materials for these inbuilt constructions as those used for main furniture. Kitchen furniture made from natural hard wood (oak, cherry, beech, nut-tree) and work surface from granite and marble look impressive and respectable.

Ultramodern directions of finishing are represented by metal surfaces (stainless steel, aluminum) and heat-resistant glass. Inexpensive surfaces can be made of laminated plastic, ceramic tiles, plastic. All these materials are rather practical and differ in the ways of installation and operation: laminated plastics is deformed by high temperatures, the tiles can crack as a result of unsuccessful landing of a heavy pan, plastic is vulnerable to scratches, but in contrast to laminated plastic it withstands high temperature almost without deformation. No kitchen can do without silent assistants, such as a gas cooker, refrigerator, sink. Selection of equipment depends only on you. When the kitchen is small, the equipment and sink are to be compact.

There are sinks of various shapes and dimensions; in our opinion, it is better to select a round sink made from stainless steel. It is smaller than the square one, yet everyone, who has ever used a round sink, will agree that it is more convenient for washing and cleaning, and besides it has a more aesthetic look.
It is very convenient, if the sink has additional ribbed trays for drying dishware, the water then does not spill on the surface of the table top and gradually trickles down to the sink. There are models, where the sink is combined with a drying apparatus, but if you have a dishwasher, you can do without a drying apparatus. Instead, choose a sink with two additional compartments for wetting cutlery and rinsing washed dishware. The drawback of the combined multisection sink is that it takes up too much space. If you have some room, buy a wider 800-mm table top instead of a standard 600-mm one. Then the part of the table top that adjoins the wall can be lifted for 15-20 mm and you will have a convenient shelf. Besides under the table top you can have a special cavity 20 cm deep that will allow you to conceal drainage equipment. As a result, we get additional space under the sink, where you can put a dishwasher and arrange shelves for cleaners on the remaining space.

The main principle of placing the sink is convenience. It should not be located far from the gas cooker and be connected with it via a common work surface. If the kitchen is small and you planned it as a single line (please refer to the previous article), place the sink in the center, and refrigerator and the gas cooker on each side. A sink in the corner looks good in a big kitchen. The main advantage is economy of space. It is possible to plan a kitchen island; in this case the sink perfectly fits into the center of the composition.
One more must of the kitchen interior is the gas cooker. Modern cookers with burners and an oven have the same height as the furniture, that is why there are no problems with breaking off the sole horizontal work surface. Nevertheless, if the cooker does not match this parameter, it is preferable to choose models with a flap that closes the burners, when food has been cooked.

Inbuilt kitchen equipment is more expensive, yet more convenient. You can use any combination of equipment at your discretion. This principle is called domino. The basic modules are gas and electric burners, an oven, a cooking panel. Delicatessen-lovers will install a grill, a deep-fryer, a steamer, a brazier. You are absolutely free in the flight of your fancy and can endlessly enrich your arsenal of kitchen innovations. Work with inbuilt models is practical, because you use minimum dishware and have maximum pleasure from cooking. Also important is the fact that cooker hoods are inbuilt as well, they absorb smoke and soot in the horizontal, but not vertical direction. A substantial drawback that prevents many people from buying inbuilt equipment is its high price.

A small fridge, as well as the washing machine, can be put under the work surface. If you need a big fridge, dont forget about the law of non-breaking off the work surface, when you place it.
So, you have taken care about all kitchen components, and in conclusion add to the interior some personal charm, because its face should reflect the traits of your personality.

Your imagination will prompt what elements of dcor are relevant in your interior, these can be flowers, paintings, porcelain collections or just cute trifles. The designers of the best repair and construction companies will help you orientate in the endless variety of kitchen furniture and household appliances. With their help your kitchen will be not only convenient and cozy, but will also become a unique reflection of your personality.

Concrete Methods - Adding Reinforcement

One of the most important factors to consider when pouring, forming and placing concrete is what kind reinforcement is needed, if any is needed at all. Recent technologies in concrete mix designs have made many more available and cost effective solutions to your reinforcement needs. Some times all that is needed is an engineered mix for simple floors, patios, driveways, porches and slabs. However, larger structures that support greater weights require more reinforcement and are required by general building codes.

Depending on the structure you are making will be what determines the type of reinforcement needed. Concrete walls require the use of steel rebar. Usually the sticks of rebar are tied together based on an engineered plan. Building codes, structural design and an engineer usually determine how much is needed and how it should be placed in the concrete. The larger the area to support usually means the higher amount of rebar as well as the grade (diameter of rebar or rebar size). Smaller flatwork pieces like residential flat work usually only require an engineered bag mix of concrete, or simple wire mesh. Wire mesh concrete reinforcement is often used when placing a boiler heat system in a driveway for example. This wire mesh must be set just right so as not to puncture the tubes when pouring concrete and to eliminate protruding wire from the concrete slab.

Thicker walls and floors will almost always require mats of rebar (rebar sticks tied together vertically and horizontally in specific lengths and spaced properly based on what it supports). This reinforcement is usually tied to footings that have been poured with sticks of rebar placed into and protruding upward or leaning into the floor to connect the mats together. Reinforcement can be bought pre-bent or bent on site based on need. The reinforcement is usually throughout the entire structure including columns. The higher up and the more to support the more reinforcement and concrete is needed, both in quantity and grade size. Improper placement of reinforcement, lack of reinforcement, incorrect type of reinforcement and inadequate sizing causes weakness, structural damage and protrusion from the structure. Most buildings require an a building inspector to pass off whether or not the proper amount, size, type and placement is correct. Hiring a contractor who is qualified to do it right is very important.

Once the size of the reinforcement is determined how much of it is needed to support the structure you are building? These requirements usually come in the form of an engineered plan stating the bare minimum needed. If you are not sure, hire an engineer to review your needs. They usually state the type that is needed as well. Structures that are exposed to water elements usually require that they be epoxy coated. This epoxy coating is usually a thin layer of epoxy that the rebar is coated with to protect the bar or mats from rusting and give it longevity.

Because reinforcement can get expensive, modern technology is trying to focus on ways to place reinforcement directly into concrete mixes, by the use of engineering mix designs. Engineers are researching the use of graphite in the mix to bond it together and provide reinforcement as well as other chemicals. Progress is advancing at a rapid pace and many different mix types are available. Some builders and engineers require these mixes on jobs in addition to steel reinforcement. They usually require testing of the strength of the mix by pouring core samples to test at a later date to make sure it is not defective. If the strength test is not met to the required standard, it must be removed and replaced until it passes. If reinforcement is not inspected by a building inspector prior to pouring concrete, the building inspector can require you to remove the entire structure and start all over, or bring an imaging device to the job site and ex-ray the structure to see if it was properly placed. Usually great costs are associated with both of these. Concrete is expensive to do over, so it is important to follow building codes and requirements when installing rebar to make sure it is done right the first time.

Concrete reinforcement is an important step when considering the longevity of a structure. In my experience I haven't met a single person or company who wanted to waste their money on buildings or structures that aren't going to last. Too little reinforcement can cause severe structural failure and damage that can be expensive and dangerous. Which, is not worth it in the long run.

Painting For a Quick Face Lift

Painting is probably the quickest and cheapest fixes for your home. Your house is going to look better right away, and if you are selling, you will get back more money than you put into the project.

You are vulnerable to particles and fumes when you are sanding, painting, or working with solvents. Protect your skin by wearing cotton gloves when using sharp or abrasive tools. Wear latex gloves when working with paint. Wear neoprene gloves when handling solvents, strippers, and harsh chemicals. Protect your eyes by wearing safety glasses when working with tools. Wear goggles to protect against dust and aerosol droplets when sanding, spraying, or painting over your head. To protect your lungs sand, paint, and strip outside, or cross ventilate with a least 2 open windows or doors. If there is a danger of breathing dust, aerosol, or solvent fumes, filter the air with a respirator.

Priming is essential and helps ensure a professional looking paint job. primer is fundamental to good looking walls, not a way to sell you one more paint product. It is a specially formulated product designed to:

Increase adhesion.

Help the finish coat develop maximum sheen.

Give the finish coat a uniform appearance.

Increase the finish coat coverage.

prevent blemishes on an old surface form bleeding through the new coat of paint.

Add to metal corrosion resistance.

In preparation for painting:

1. Move furniture away from walls and protect floor and baseboards with 12-inch base board masking and a paper/poly drop cloth

2. Set Popped nails or screws, repair cracks and holes, and fill dents with light weight crack filler.

3. Let the crack filler dry based on instruction.

4. Treat any areas of mildew with 3-to-1 water/bleach solution and protect your hands with rubber gloves.

5. Rinse the entire wall surface with clean, fresh water and let the wall dry overnight.Clean with a TSP solution before you prime and paint.

6. Spot prime all of the repaired areas with a latex stain-blocking primer.

7. Prime the entire wall with the same stain -blocking primer for uniformity.

Glossy paints dry to a hard, nonporous surface; therefore, it is almost impossible for new paint to adhere effectively. Glossy surface lack what painters call "tooth," or roughness, which gives the paint something to stick to. A light sanding or use of a chemical deglosser will do the trick to for a "tooth."

Although priming is vital to lasting finish and a great looking room, there are also sound economic reasons for a good priming job. Primer is not just a watery paint. It is formulated to adhere well to a variety of surfaces and seals them to prevent stains and discoloration from bleeding through the final coat.

Mask the room and determine the order for painting the room. Paint last the areas that are likely to get dripped on. Prime and paint ceiling first, and walls second, and trim last. If you plan to prime the trim with a different tint than you will use on the walls, mask the trim first. Mask the top of the walls if you are painting the ceiling. Mask the ceiling and trim if you are starting with the walls.

If using latex, dip the brush in water to help absorb the primer. If using alkyd, dip the brush in mineral spirits. Brush out the liquid on a piece of cardboard to remove loose bristles. Brush primer on areas of walls and trim that need special attention: patches in drywall and plaster, areas of bare wood exposed by scraping and sanding, and any spots treated with stain blocker.

It if hard for a dry roller to absorb primer or paint. So prime the roller before you put it in the primer or paint. If the prime is latex, spritz the roller with a garden mister and squeeze off the excess water. Use mineral spirits for alkyd primer. Run the roller over the paint grid or roller pan several times to get an even amount of primer on the roller cover.

Prime the ceiling. Start on the short side of the room and "cut in" the edges about 2 inches wide and about 5 feet long along the edge of the ceiling. Then, wearing safety goggles and an old cap , roll paint onto the ceiling, working the roller into the cut-in areas to remove as many brush marks as possible. Roll with diagonal strokes and move from the edge toward the middle of the room. Continue cutting in and rolling until your are finished.

Cut in a section of the wall. Wait until the ceiling dries and mask it off with blue painter's masking tape. Mask off the trim if you haven't already done so. Starting in a corner, prime along about 5 feet of trim, 5 feet of ceiling, and from top to bottom of the corner.

To minimize the wall area that will have a brush-stroke texture, run the roller over the strips you have primed during the cutting stage, getting as close as possible to the masked trim, ceiling, or adjacent wall.

Begin rolling at the top section of the wall along the cut-in strip. Sand the walls if necessary. Roll the ceiling with the finish color. When the primer is dry, mask around the ceiling. After cutting in a section, start rolling, Protect your eyes with safety goggles and wear an old cap. A 5-gallon bucket with a roller grid requires a filling less often and is less likely to tip than a paint tray. Use a relatively dry roller to reduce spattering. Roll diagonally, as you did to prime, to avoid creating visible rows across the ceiling. Extension poles you to reach more areas without leaning dangerously from a ladder. Then after apply the finish putting on the paint. You can apply more than one coat if you feel that is necessary.

Prime and paint the trims, remove the masking for the walls, allow the pain to dry thoroughly, and mask off for the trim. Control dripping by pouring the trim paint into a small bucket and dip the trim paint into a small bucket and dip the trim paint into a small bucket and dip the brush about halfway into the paint. Tap the brush against the sides instead of scraping it around the rim to remove excess paint in the tip of the brush; This will leave paint in the body of the brush.

Continue painting the delicate areas like the windows and edges with caution until you are completed with your paint job. Your paint job will end up looking professional, because it was done using the right steps.

Advantages Of Various Patio Doors

Patio doors present appropriate access with added advantages over standard entry doors. These doors are entirely glazed to expand the view and pouring the interior with natural light. As old-style patio doors were notorious for heat loss and poor security, modern doors offer significant improvements. The frames and glazing are more energy-efficient, incorporate multi-point locking mechanisms for enhanced security, and sophisticated flashing packages to prevent leakage. The basic types of patio doors are sliding and hinged, offering distinct feature sets. Sliding patio doors are best for maximizing views and admitting daylight. They contain two or more individual panels; at least one is able to slide back and forth on concealed rollers. Sliding panels can be united with fixed panels to make dramatically wide expanses of glazing. Panels will slide parallel to the wall so they don't obstruct furniture placement or walking areas outdoors or in indoors.

Whereas hinged patio doors operate in much the same way as standard entry doors, but they are completely glazed and frequently hang in pairs. In one pattern, the doors are center hung and open much as butterfly wings. On the other hand French doors are hinged at the side jambs that the door panels meet when it is closed. The latching mechanism is enclosed in an astragal that is mounted to one of the doors. When these doors are open, the whole area between the hinges is apparent. Choosing a patio door comes down to a subject of aesthetics versus energy-efficiency. Swinging doors can be weather-stripped more efficiently than a sliding door, but individual panels are narrow and more visually obstructive. Sliding doors are more space efficient and lend itself to larger openings, but the huge expanse of glass is complicated in regard to heat loss and also solar heat gain.

The two major elements of a patio door are the border and the glazing, and depending on which part of the country the door will be used, either one of these things may be the deciding factor. The metal-frame doors are characteristically less luxurious and less energy-efficient than the fiberglass or wood doors, but they are offering the advantage of a less obtrusive casing. The main disadvantage of a wooden frame is the amount of maintenance that it requires. Clad goods try to offer the best of both the worlds, and have the energy-efficiency of a wood casing with low-maintenance of vinyl or aluminum cladding. Taking the case of clad wood patio doors, manufacturers offer a selection of wood for the core surfaces of the frame, normally a veneer. Try to choose wood such as pine if the inner surface will be painted. Other woods, such as Mahogany, Douglas fir, alder and maple are more suitable for stained or apparent finishes. The glazing of a patio doors have a considerable impact on its energy efficiency and its cost. These doors, particularly the sliding models, offer wide expanses of glazing to arrest views and admit daylight, but that same expanse is a major source of heat gain in the summer and also heat loss in the winter. Manufacturers are offering a number of glazing options to lessen heat loss and heat gain.

Choosing Your New Bathtub

Are you a homeowner? If so, if you are given the option to change one thing about your bathroom, what would you choose? If you are similar to many other homeowners, there is a high possibility that the bathtub was your answer. In the United States, there are a rather large number of homeowners who wish that they had a new bathtub. If you are among those individuals, the good news is you don't have to wish any longer? If you want a new bathtub, you should get one. Making a new bathtub part of your bathroom remodeling project isn't as hard as it may appear.

Perhaps, the first step in selecting your new bathtub is deciding on the amount of money set aside for your budget. In addition, if you are remodeling your entire bathroom, it is important that you not make the cost of a new bathtub your only focus, but also the cost of your other supplies. If you mistakenly overspent on a new bathtub, it could affect the rest of your bathroom remodeling plans. Furthermore, you will probably discover that setting a bathtub limit or budget is the best method to cut down on shopping time. Having in mind the amount of money that would be consider overspent will prevent you from wasting your time, by examining bathtubs that you are unable to afford.

It is also a fine idea to decide, ahead of time, how you would like to have your new bathtub installed. If you have plans to hire a professional to install your new bathtub, you will need to be aware of the extra costs. Even though you might want to avoid paying a professional contractor, you may need to. There are several bathroom contractors who specialize in replacing bathtubs. In fact, some, literally, just place a new bathtub right over the old one. It may be feasible for you to do this yourself, but, in most cases, you will discover that a professional contractor would take as little as a few hours to install your new bathtub.

Regardless of whether your choice is to install your own bathtub or hire a professional to do it for you, you will have to find a new bathtub to purchase. If you are planning to have your old bathtub completely removed, you will probably discover that you have more options. When a new bathtub replaces an old bathtub, the tubs need to be somewhat similar in size or style. Hence, if you are remodeling your bathroom with the expectations of getting a "new," bathroom, you may be searching for something different. Fortunately for you, you still have a limitless number of options.

In the United States, the most regularly installed bathtubs types consist of traditional ones, which are also known as standard tubs. These bathtubs are frequently connected directly to the wall, positioned in a corner, and sit right on the floor. One of the good points about the majority of traditional bathtubs is the comparatively affordable price. You can buy a traditional bathtub for as low as two hundred dollars. If comfort is your concern, instead of price, you may want to consider spa-like bathtubs or even massage bathtubs. These bathtubs, as you may guess, are more expensive than most others. Several massage bathtubs or spa-like bath tubs go for around one or two thousand dollars. If you are searching for a trendy, stylish bathtub, you may fancy owning a freestanding bathtub. You can get a freestanding bathtub from as low as five hundred dollars, but it can also reach into the thousands.

Once you have made the decision of purchasing a bathtub that suits your preference, you will need to settle on on a particular tub. Perhaps, shopping is the greatest way to accomplish this. You may find it simpler to decide when you are able to view the bathtub displays set up. For an extensive range of bathtubs, consisting of displays, you are recommended to checkout one of your local home improvement stores.

A Guide to Tap Water Filtration Systems

Ever wondered what type of home water filter is best? When it comes to tap water filtration systems, there are many models and methods to choose from. It's important to realize that most products out there are mediocre so you can shop wisely and carefully. Here are some important factors to consider when you shop around for a home water filter.

When doing your shopping, you are going to come across three types of tap water filtration systems: distillation, reverse osmosis, and carbon filtration. It's important to compare all of these methods while taking cost, effectiveness, efficiency, and convenience into consideration.

When it comes to cost, carbon filtration comes out on top. Carbon filtration costs less than 10 cents per gallon. Comparatively, reverse osmosis costs 18 to 24 cents per gallon and distillation costs 20 to 26 cents per gallon.

As for effectiveness, reverse osmosis and distillation take the backseat because they are not effective in removing both organic and synthetic chemicals and must be used in conjunction with a carbon filter. Of all tap water filtration systems, carbon filters are the most effective because used alone they can remove all types of contaminants.

Carbon tap water filtration systems are also very fast and efficient. They can produce up to 30 gallons per hour and don't waste any water in the process. On the other hand, distillation and reverse osmosis are very slow and produce less than a gallon per hour. Reverse osmosis is also very wasteful; it wastes 2 to 3 gallons of water for every gallon of clean water it produces.

Carbon tap water filtration systems are very convenient. They can be installed easily in a matter of minutes and you can choose from whole house filters, shower head filters, countertop filters, and under-the-sink filters. You can even get a sports water bottle that has a carbon filter built in so you can have clean water anytime, anywhere.

Unlike carbon filtration systems, reverse osmosis and distillation systems are very complicated. They have to be installed by a plumber and are high-maintenance. For example, reverse osmosis systems require a diaphragmed storage tank and adequate water pressure in order to function properly.

Another reason why carbon tap water filtration systems are the best is the fact that they don't remove the beneficial trace minerals from tap water. Trace minerals in tap water such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium are essential to maintaining good health. Reverse osmosis and distillation produce de-mineralized water. Drinking de-mineralized water can lead to multiple mineral deficiencies and even cancer in the long run.

Make no mistake about it. When it comes to tap water filtration systems, carbon block or granular filters are far superior to any other method out there. Carbon filters are affordable, effective, fast, and efficient, and produce healthy water rich in essential minerals. So get out there and get a carbon tap water filter if you want 24/7 access to fresh, clean water, the foundation to good health.

Kitchen Fire Damage - Carlsbad Home Repairs

Kitchen fires are possible and they happen a lot every year around the world. Kitchen fires can be started from the stove, oven, cooking in general, wires, and other things. So it is good to keep a close eye on your cooking and the appliances you use. If you buy a house, you need to check if there has been any fire in the kitchen because if it is not checked out fully, it can cause it to happen again. Wires can still be burned or be exposed or melted that may have been left there after the fire that no one found.

You also need to check if there is any fire damage left behind the walls because that is not good to have in the house. Those areas might be weak. Make sure all the walls and boards to the floor have been changed so there is not charring and danger to you. When you are cooking, keep kids out of the room so they will not get hurt, and you need to watch every pan you use and watch how you cook. Because if you don't, things can happen, such as fires, flames shooting out, which can burn the wall, and it can run the wires to the burner. Also if you do not watch what you are doing and how hot the pots can get, the metal to the pot can form a hole in it and can shoot sparks everywhere.

This can happen whether there is something frying or boiling and it can melt the burner as well. If you are frying something you need to watch the oil because it can splatter out and get on the floor, which can cause you to slip and fall. If it causes you to get burned by the oil, it will cause fire damage to your skin. You have to keep all plug-ins away from the oil because the oil can get in the plug-ins and cause it to spark. Watch your appliances because they can cause fire by malfunction in the cords and if the appliances do not work right. They can cause shorts on the cords and start the plug-ins on fire, which can cause melting and damages to the wires.

This can cause a fire in the walls, and it can start the appliances on fire as well. You need to watch what you cook in the oven because if it cooks for too long, it can start the food on fire, causing smoke to come out of the oven. You need to have a fire extinguisher. It is very important that you do just in case a fire comes up and it is burning your house. To prevent a fire, you can turn the stove on low or medium-high so it will not get so hot and you might not burn your food. Check all appliances before using them, watch everything you do, and check all plug-ins as well.

Refurb Your Home - Fallbrook Home Construction

Discount flooring can be a great way to get a new or older home renovated quickly and affordably. Although discount flooring used to mean substandard materials that looked poor, there are materials available today that are both appealing and cheap. Hardwood flooring and expensive carpeting are no longer necessary to achieve a great look in the home or in a commercial setting. There are a number of manufacturers out there today that can supply quality flooring at a very low price.

For some of the best flooring, look to suppliers that can provide vinyl flooring. Vinyl is easily one of the best and most affordable flooring solutions out on the market today. Both very affordable and flexible, vinyl flooring can work in almost all environments while providing a great looking surface. Vinyl flooring has been in use in the commercial sector for many years because of its incredible durability. Floors with a great deal of traffic demand a tough surface that won't suffer under frequent abrasions. Vinyl flooring provides just the durability needed to resist the abrasions of everyday high traffic levels.

Vinyl is also very resistant to stains and water damage. Pressure sealed against water damage, vinyl flooring is vulnerable neither from the top nor the subfloor. The pressure sealed flooring will not absorb stains either, and as long as the spill is cleaned up promptly, it should leave no mark. When vinyl flooring loses its luster, it can be easily restored with a buffing or refinishing of the surface. This is an extremely simple surface to care for, and does not require the sanding sometimes needed with a wood floor.

Wood can be very appealing, but it is also expensive and high maintenance. Wood can bow or buckle with water damage and moisture exposure. The flooring is also susceptible to expansion and contraction over the years, eventually leading to cracks in the surface.

Vinyl flooring does not suffer from these problems, and with its interlocking tile system, damaged tiles can be very simply removed and replaced.

Carpet can sometimes be an affordable solution, but it is also prone to suffering damage over time. Moisture and stains can be absorbed into the surface, causing a great deal of damage over time. Carpets can also be damaged by abrasion as time passes, becoming frayed and torn in places.

What You Should Know Before Making the Switch to Home Solar Electricity

In the past 10 years, switching to home solar electricity has become more and more popular and affordable. However, it can still be out of reach for the average home owner who is cash strapped, especially in this tough economic environment. What's a would-be energy conservationist on a budget supposed to do?

Currently, the federal government is offering upwards of $4,000, and ever more, in tax credits in an effort to promote renewable energy use in the home through the Energy Improvement and Extension Act of 2008 (I'm no tax specialist so make sure to consult someone who is before applying for this credit). If this isn't enough of an incentive to get you to make the switch to home solar electricity, than I don't know what is.

You'd love to take advantage of this great tax credit deal, right? Who wouldn't? Not only that, but perhaps your reasons for switching to solar power are nobler, and you're just looking to help out the environment. Whatever your reasons, and as much as you want to make the switch, you just don't have the money to install a home solar electricity system in the first place.

Since most quality solar panel systems can run in the thousands of dollars, it's understandable that they would be out of reach for the average homeowner. What if there was a way to be able to build your own home solar electricity system for a fraction of the cost, and it would be modular so you could scale it up to suit your needs, would you be interested?

You actually CAN build your own set of home solar panels for around $200 apiece, and you can do it with parts you can get at your local home improvement store. You can even build as many of these units as you need to eliminate your electric bill for good.

Do you only want enough solar electricity to run everyday appliances like your TV, VCR, DVD player, computer, coffee maker, etc., or do you want enough solar panels to power your entire home? The choice is yours, and you can build as many as you want, until you're completely off the grid.

Something else to consider before building your solar panels are the three types of systems...

The first type is a grid-tied system. In this one, your solar panels are tied into your current power meter. This means that you will use electricity both from your solar panels as well as from electric company. This is a great option to start with if you're not ready to go completely off the grid, or if you're on a tight budget.

The second type is a grid-tied system with battery backup. Just as the name implies, it's similar to the first in that your solar panels are tied to the grid, but you also store energy in the batteries for emergencies. The excess is still sent back to the electric companies through your meter.

The final type is a stand-alone system. This one also incorporates a battery backup for energy storage. The difference between this one and the previous two is that you are completely cut off from the electric companies. With this one, you are truly living off the grid, and saving tons of money doing so.

You have the choice of what type of system you can build. You don't even have to stick to one. As you become more and more comfortable building your own solar panels, you can get to the point where your home solar electricity system is completely stand-alone, and for a lot less then it would cost if you bought a commercial solar panel system.

Once you educate yourself on providing your home with solar electricity, you are probably ready to start. You can do it with the right system that allows you to save thousands of dollars by building your own solar panels. And, don't forget the great example you'll be setting for your family and friends, and the pride you'll feel, as you reduce you carbon footprint.

Don't buy commercial solar panels that can cost you thousands of dollars. Instead, build your own, modular home solar electricity system at a fraction of the cost. Build as many solar panels as you want. Live completely off the grid if you want. The choice is yours.

When Plumbing Problems Require Professional Help

Most homeowners who have lived in their house for more than a few years develop the rudimentary plumbing and repair skills necessary to take care of small maintenance jobs. If the toilet clogs or a small leak develops in a pipe, you may take pride in your ability to fix things without the help of a professional plumber. And that's a good thing, too; by taking care of your own small plumbing repairs, you save your family hundreds of dollars, add to the value of your home, and get a sense of satisfaction in knowing that you can maintain your own home.

While completing your own repairs may be a good idea for small plumbing problems, it can actually turn out to be a very bad thing to attempt on significant, serious maintenance jobs in your home. Take, for example, replacing a hot water heater. While some homeowners might have the experience to do this themselves, the vast majority should only rely on a professional plumber to take care of a job this big. For time consuming, in-depth plumbing repair jobs, trying to teach yourself just to save a few bucks could actually end up costing you more in the long run.

The most dangerous situation that could arise from attempting your own large plumbing projects is a possibility of physically harming yourself or a member of your family. While the chances are remote, you should never risk hurting yourselves or your loved ones by attempting to repair or replace a hot water heater, gas line, water line or other large units. Without the proper tools, training and manpower, some of these jobs can end up being much more dangerous than you might think. If there is any doubt in your mind about the safety of a plumbing project, pull out the phone book and call an expert.

A second, less devastating consequence of performing your own plumbing repairs is expensive damage to your property. There are plenty of examples of overzealous homeowners who caused thousands of dollars worth of damage to their property because they didn't want to pay a plumber to fix the problem. Especially when dealing with gas lines, water lines and sewer lines, do not attempt any significant repairs or replacements without first contacting a professional plumbing company.

You should be proud of your ability to repair small plumbing problems that may occur in your home, but don't let stubbornness keep you from calling in a professional for jobs you can't handle alone. No matter how new or well maintained your home is, it will eventually experience a maintenance problem that will require an expert plumber to make a visit. By spending a few dollars now, you could save hundreds or even thousands with a repair job that is much less likely to fail or cause damage to your home.

Fireplace Design Ideas

Are you trying to find some inspiring information about fireplace design ideas? There are some basic elements to any fireplace that are generally addressed in turn, in order to come up with a complete fireplace design. There are three main components to any fireplace design.

The three primary components to fireplace design include the hearth, the firebox and the type of opening that is employed between the firebox and the room in which the fireplace is located. The hearth is the area outside of the firebox, in general. The firebox is the area in which the fire itself will be burned.

Hearths

Let's first talk about hearths. A hearth may be flush with the floor, raised above the floor, or sunk down lower than the floor. Additionally, there may be no hearth to speak of at all. In these cases the firebox should be at least two inches above the floor, as the hearth is what helps protect the floor from the heat of the fire.

Another type of hearth may include hearth seats of various kinds. The most traditional and popular type of fireplace with hearth seats are the kinds that feature simply two blocks on either side of the firebox opening.

Fireboxes

As with the hearth types, the different kinds of fireboxes generally have mainly to do with the height relative to the floor and / or hearth. There are raised fireboxes, flush fireboxes that are the same height as the floor, and there are dropped fireboxes that are somewhat lower than the hearth and / or floor in front of the fireplace.

Fireplace Openings

Of course the most widely utilized type of fireplace opening is the rectangular opening. Generally, a rectangular opening will be just that: rectangular in shape. However, even with rectangular openings, the sides typically flare outward from the firebox toward the face of the fireplace.

There are flat arch top openings where the sides are straight, yet the tope of the opening has a slight arch to the shape. As with the traditional rectangular opening, the sides typically flare outward from the firebox toward the face of the fireplace.

There are full arch fireplace openings where the opening contains no straight lines. These types of fireplace openings have one continuous curve all around the fireplace opening. This is the type of opening you are probably used to seeing in American Southwestern style fireplaces.

There are also corner fireplace openings that allow for there to be two open sides to the fireplace. As the name suggests, a corner opening fireplace is situated in such a way that an entire corner section of the firebox is exposed.

There are U-shaped fireplace openings where the firebox is exposed on three sides, the front, as well as the two side areas. These last two types of fireplace openings will generally produce better heat radiation. If you will be using your fireplace to heat your home, and not merely as decoration these are certainly worth looking into. Make A Home Wind Generator and Produce 80% of Your Electricity

An average American household consumes 920kWh of electricity a month. With the rising trend of energy cost, you are likely to pay much more for your power bills in the next few years. So why not make a home wind generator and start to produce your own electricity supply?

The idea of using wind generators to produce electricity is not a new one. Although initially only huge turbines are manufactured and run to produce electricity for industries and remote areas, there are now small generator units that are designed for the average home. Even more recently, you can make one from home easily and at a much lower cost.

Instead of spending thousands of dollars to purchase a factory produced wind generator, many average income households are learning to make one from home. This involves obtaining a set of building instructions and using simple materials to construct the wind energy system. All in all, the cost of making your own generator rings out less than $200 in most cases.

The Internet is filled with numerous websites showing you the exact steps to make the wind generator. These resources are mostly free but are geared towards individuals who are technically trained and understand technical jargons and drawings.

For the less technically-inclined person, there are professional starter kits available that will help guide you to make a home wind generator easily. Most of these manuals are well-written and include videos and pictures to make things simple for you.

But there are many skeptics who question whether such kits can really help you make a wind generator from home. Thousands of people around the world have already made their wind-electricity units just by using a DIY kit and are already producing their own electricity.

Now if that is not enough proof that you can make a home wind generator with the help of a DIY kit, then you sure are missing out on a pot of gold.

Home wind generators are meant to help you save money, so start saving today! Get the most popular wind power kit and be the first in your neighborhood to learn how to make a home wind generator.

Who knows, you might turn out to be the wind energy expert in your town someday!

A Bathroom For the Country House

In this day and age the city can become stressful and aggravating for any bloke and sometimes we just need to get away to the country and relax at the cottage. We are looking for and need a slower pace and cannot keep up the pressures and needs that come along with city life. Anytime we take off for the country, we want to be in relaxing and enjoy the moments we do have, and sometimes that means we have to put in the effort to make our country flat feel like home.

One of the places in a cottage that is in need of the most fixing up is the toilet. Chances are, your cottage goes back a few centuries and the toilet hasn't exactly kept up with the times and the new advancements. There is no time like now to fix up the toilet and make it into your own. Whenever a bloke is fixing up the toilet it is important for them to understand the dcor for themselves and for the country lifestyle they are living.

Your country toilet will generally have a tub, a loo, and a sink, so it is important to build on that and bring the best out of what you have. Most country toilets do not have a shower and it is perfectly normal for you to want to put one in. You may want to feel the relaxation of a whirl pool in your tub, and with the right tools this can be easily done and give you bubbles and jets to relax those aching muscles. Whenever someone is in their country cottage, they want the relaxation that it provides, but they also want the modern convenience of their flat in the city.

While in the country, you may want to use some of the famous parts that used to be incorporated in the old toilets, like pedestal sinks. These are great and will fit right into any toilet sink. Guests will marvel at how you are reliving the ancient days and will enjoy the use of your pedestal sinks. If they are already in your toilet, then you can refurbish them; otherwise, you can install them and find out how handy and fun they can be to use.

When we think of a country setting, the first image that pops into our mind our trees and wood. It is well known that a wood floor and water do not go hand in hand. That means you should add wood into other areas of the toilet, such as the walls and cabinets. You can also include wooden pegs around the toilet to hand up towels and clothes while using the toilet's facilities; and many people don't think about it, but a wooden cover on the loo can make it good looking and more comfortable. This will give your toilet the country feel you desire, while avoiding all the pitfalls of having a hardwood floor.

Toilets are an intimate setting and adding candles and warm fragrances will make you want to sit in that bubble bath for a few extra minutes and forget about the stresses in the real world.

A Friend and I Learn How to Build a Fireplace

Learning how to build a fireplace is not a simple matter for anyone I know of. Most people that I know would love to hire out these kinds of projects. There are always those very exceptional folks who enjoy taking on these kinds of projects for the sheer accomplishment of it. I have a delightful friend who begins many of these tasks, but never quite seems to finish them. When I go to his home, it's like visiting a warehouse for misplaced and unused objects. It makes me stop and wonder!

His most recent project, and now mine, is in learning how to build one's own fireplace. I know nothing about this which I suppose says a good deal about what I do know! Of the many things I have read on the subject, one of the most important things to realize is that a sound foundation is crucial. The foundation needs to be made of something that will not burn. Sounds obvious and reasonable but apparently not so to everyone. Another important consideration in learning how to build a fireplace is to recognize and understand what your local code enforcement rulings are. It is best to accept what they are and work with them, not against them. Time is short and so is money. So, don't create a structure that has to be torn down in the end because you didn't think someone would come around and check out your construction.

Also, I really want to nail down the basics regarding safety considerations. I want the smoke and other fuel by-products to vent out properly. I don't want to be suffocated after all of my hard work! I suspect that the neighbors don't either. The rest of my concerns are more easy to manage. I know what my budget will allow for and I know what component materials I want to use. I have a preference for brick, red brick to be specific. I can't imagine having a fireplace made of any other material. Well, I am ready to begin the actual building of my fireplace and I am excited. Wish me well!

Solar Panels For the Home Reduces the Homeowner's Energy Cost

Solar energy is a great renewable resource that is growing in popularity with the average consumer. As energy prices skyrocket and the average income stagnating, if not falling, consumers are looking for a way to reduce their costs of living in any area possible. The rise of renewable energy, and the desire to wean our society off of fossil fuels, makes using solar panels for the home a great alternative for power.

Solar power kits save energy for the homeowner because they allow the homeowner to generate their own electricity to power their home. In some cases, the homeowner can go completely off-grid and even sell additional electricity back to the power company. What a powerful concept to be able to take an expense and turn it into an asset.

What are solar panels?

A solar panel is a packaged interconnected assembly of solar cells that are cased in a housing unit to protect the cells from the weather and from physical damage. These panels generate electricity, which is then used to directly power devices in the home, or charge battery cells to store the power for nighttime use. A solar power kit typically includes solar panels, an inverter and interconnection wiring to connect the panel to the electrical system in the home. For those that want to live off the grid, batteries are included for continuous power during the day and night. The use of infrared solar cells also allows the homeowner to generate electricity at night, thus increasing the efficiency of these cells.

The technology of solar cells continues to advance with time. Currently, the efficiency rate of solar cells range from 5% to 19% depending upon the technology. The reason is that the solar cells (or photo-voltaic cells) only convert a limited range of sunlight frequencies into electricity. The renewable energy industry is experimenting with advanced technologies that will raise the efficiency of these solar cells by a whopping 50%.

A new technology for solar cells, also called thin film or third generation solar cells, is being researched. The benefit of this new generation is that they have a higher efficiency and they cost less. These brands are both rigid and flexible thin film modules. The differences between the rigid thin film module and the flexible thin film module are due to differences in the materials that are used to make the modules and differences in the production of the modules.

Solar modules can last anywhere from 10 to 25 years while still operating at 80% of their original capacity. Every year the number of panels sold to consumers continues to grow. In 2007 over 4 million solar units were sold. There are a number of manufacturers that produce solar panels for consumer use, however the average consumer can create their own solar panels using materials from their local hardware store.

Solar panels for the home can provide renewable energy for the consumer. The initial costs can range greatly if the consumer chooses to build their own solar energy kit or have another company install a solar power kit. As the technology improves, the homeowner will have more options available to them to completely power their home with renewable solar power energy.

Discover how you can power your home with solar energy for under $200. You only have to have the right information. The reviews on these popular DIY solar panel info guides that show you how to create solar panels for home, will help you make an informed decision. How to Fix a Leaking Showerhead Faucet

A leaky showerhead can be both annoying and costly. After a few hours, the constant dripping noise is as brutal on the eardrums as nails on a chalkboard. And, even though a singular drip is only a few milliliters of water, it doesnt take long before that leaky showerhead wastes hundreds of gallons adding an extra zero to the end of the water bill.

Most homeowners dont realize that a leaking showerhead is pretty simple to fix. Theres no need to buy a new one or, worse yet, hire a plumber. You can finish the job yourself in just a few short minutes with nothing more than a screwdriver, an adjustable wrench, and a washer that you can buy for a nickel at any hardware store.

Now that youve decided to take on the job yourself, you need to understand the two most common things that go wrong with showerheads. Either they start leaking at the point where the pipe screws into the actual showerhead, or the holes in the showerhead become clogged, causing water backups and creating a leak.

First, youll need to unscrew the showerhead from the outlet pipe. To protect the showerhead from damage, wrap a towel around the point where the head screws onto the outlet piping. Take the pliers and remove the head from the outlet. Youll see the washer. Pull it off and replace it with the new one. If you think you need a tighter seal, use plumbers tape across the threads before screwing the showerhead back in.

Also, if you have a rotating or swiveling showerhead, you might as well take an extra step while you have it taken apart. To increase the swivel range and flexibility, take some lubricant, preferably silicone, and lube up the interior swivel ball before you screw the head back in.

If the holes in the showerhead are clogged, take off the faceplate by removing the screws attaching it to the head. If you cant remove the faceplate, thats okay, just keep the entire unit unscrewed. The reason showerheads get clogged is the lime deposits that are formed and get stuck in the holes over time. To get rid of the lime deposits, take either the faceplate or the whole showerhead, and soak it in a bowl of white vinegar for at least eight hours. This will dissolve the deposits, and make them easy to remove by sticking a toothpick or small nail through the holes in the showerhead. After that, scrub the faceplate with a stiff plastic brush and screw the unit back into the wall.

Energy Bills on the Rise

High Energy Bills on the rise, and right now a lot of people are worried about high home energy bills, including the costs of air conditioning, heating, and electricity.

The good news is that there are a lot of easy, inexpensive ways you can do to bring your energy bills down immediately.

Every kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity produces about 1.7 pounds of carbon dioxide equivalent. Take a look at the number of kilowatt hours. Double it (in most cases) and you're looking at pounds of greenhouse gas emissions. Want to think about pounds of carbon emissions and how to lose them?

What effective methods are available to reduce the energy we use.

Certain Appliances we use can make a huge difference. How we use those appliances can also make a big difference. Installing a different hot water heater will most likely have the biggest effect o our electric bill since it is the largest energy consuming device we have in our homes. Here are some facts about hot water heaters fa

  • Money Wasted By The US Heating Hot Water With Tanks: $5,218,007,101, that is literally 25% of dollars spent. Nationwide more residential energy is consumed by domestic hot water than on anything but heating, and air conditioning.Switching to an instant
  • Electricity is the WORST way to heat hot water while natural gas and propane gas are much more efficient, smarter choices. Based on national fuel price averages of $1.46/ccf and $0.09/kwh, the cost/100,000 BTU's is $1.46 for natural gas and $2.64 for electricity. Just under 60% of North American households have access to natural gas, and if you don't, propane gas is available to almost everyone and is still a better value than electricity. In addition electric water heaters have only a small fraction of the capacity of gas water heaters. So if you like expensive, short showers, with cold water at the end, use electric; otherwise gas would be a better choice.
  • Modern gas fired tankless water heaters are the best alternative available to todays homeowners to reduce their residential energy consumption. A typical gas fired tankless water heater costs about 2-1/2 times as much as a standard tank water heater. However it will pay for itself in just a few years or less, and will last twice as long a tank.

Swithtching to a more efficient hot water tank may initially cost more than an electric one, however it will definately pay off very quickly.

Home heating is also an area that could use some change. Efficient, ductless, compact, direct vent systems are a great technology. Believe it or not Ductless systems also allow for a healthier air quality withing the environment of your home, whether it is Direct Vent, Hearth or Hydronic Air Handlers.... Hot water heating is also a great energy efficient technology.

There are also electric saving devices that can be installed directly to the Main Power Box of your house that will literally recycle the unused and wasted electricity back into your home. This can result in as much as a 30% reduction in Energy consumption. At a simple average of 15% reduction of energy use, This type of system in 500,000 homes across this county will annually reduce the need to generate 17 megawatts of electricity saving 42,250 tons of coal or 231,500 barrels of oil and reducing by 98,250 tons of carbon dioxide, 42,000 pounds of nitrous oxide and 221,500 pounds of sulfur dioxide of annual greenhouse emissions. These types of systems are very inexpensive and have one of the quickest Return on Investment which can be from 6 months to 2 years, depending on individual use, which can vary considerably. Some of these appliances also have the ability to offer Whole House Protection from power surges and spikes, which we are constantly under attack if you are on the grid. This can actually create another undetermined savings in your electronics and appliances by lengthening their life.

There are technologies that can also be used with the Washing Machine. Technology that allows us to wash without the use of Hot Water, without the use of Detergents, an added bonus because you not only save energy from using only cold water, but by not using detergents you do two things; detergents add tremendously to a huge problem in our water supply, so by not using them is an ecological conservation. It also allows your clothes to last longer and retain good coloring as well as stay fluffier without the residue. The new technologies also kill bacteria and viruses, so cleaning your clothes so much more efficiently than what we currently use.

Solar heating and Solar hot water tanks are one of the most efficient ways of adding to the energy efficiency of your home. Again this technology has a larger initial install cost, but will save in the long run as well as now in reducing our carbon emission exponentially. That latter part is the most important part right now. And there are a number of incentive grants and tax breaks for people switching to using these great conservation technologies.
